Test Code LAB8778 Streptococcus pneumoniae Antigen

Important Note

This test is an immunochromatographic membrane assay used to detect pneumococcal soluble antigen in human urine and CSF.

Performing Lab

Arnot Ogden Medical Center

Ordering Recommendations

Useful for the detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae antigen in the urine of patients with pneumoniae and the CSF of patients with meningitis. This test is intended to be used in conjunction with culture and other test methods to aid in the diagnosis of both pneumococcal pneumoniae and pneumococcal meningitis.

Collect

Random urine:

  • For patients with suspected pneumonia
  • Unpreserved urine in a sterile container or a gray top urine preservative (boric acid) transport tube.

OR

CSF in a sterile container

  • For patients with suspected meningitis.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Urine: 24 hours at ambient temperature or up to 14 days refrigerated or frozen.
CSF: 24 hours at ambient temperature or up to 7 days refrigerated or frozen.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Transport in refrigertated conditions in a leak proof container.

Methodology

Qualitative Immunochromatographic Assay

Interpretive Data

False-positives may occur because of cross-reactivity with other members of S. mitis group. Clinical correlation is recommended.

Unacceptable Conditions

  • Improper transport media
  • Leaky transport tube
  • Improper storage
  • Mislabeled/unlabeled sample
  • Transport time exceeding stability

Notes

A negative test does not exclude infection with S. pneumoniae. The results of this test must be considered in conjunction with culture results, serology and other test methodologies in order to make an accurate diagnosis.

Patients who have received the S. pneumoniae vaccines may test positive in the 48 hours following vaccination. It is recommended to avoid testing within five days of receiving vaccination.

Samples from patients taking antibiotics for more than 24 hours may cause false-negatives.

The accuracy of this test has not been proven when urine matrix is tested in young children. Performance on CSF in children is well established.
