Performing Lab

NY State Department of Health, Wadsworth

Ordering Recommendations

This test detects Measles (Rubeola) Virus RNA produced following natural infection.  This test may be useful for diagnosing current infection with Measles Virus.

NOTE: Suspected measles cases must be reported immediately to the Local Health Department of the patient's residence.

Collect

Per NYSDOH recommendations, collect nasopharyngeal swab or oropharyngeal swab with flocked swab and place in viral transport media as soon as possible after rash onset; nasopharyngeal swab is the preferred respiratory specimen type for PCR.  Also collect urine, AND blood as soon as possible after rash onset.  Ideally all specimens should be collected within 3 days of rash onset, however, specimens can be obtained up to 7 days, but not more than 10 days after rash onset.  The blood specimen collected in a red top tube is for Serology Testing to detect antibodies to Measles Virus (see Measles IgG and Measles IgM in the Test Index).

Collect 5 - 10mL of urine in a sterile urine cup with secure sealing cap and without preservative or transport media.
