Specimen Collection

Bronchoscopy specimens:

  1. Collected via a bronchoscope into a sterile container.
  2. Brushings are preferable to washings due to the diluted nature of the washings.
  3. Bronchoalveolar lavage specimens are the specimen of choice. The lavage is done to wash cells out of small airways that bronchoscopy cannot reach.
