Ordering Recommendations

Detection and identification of yeast in clinical specimens.

Collect

  1. Culture swab (BBL culturette swab, or E-swab)
  2. Esophageal brushings in sterile saline
  3. Other specimen types collected using appropriate transport media/containers (various body sites, tissues, fluids are acceptable specimen types)

Varies. Most commonly, specimens are collected from the mouth, throat, or vagina.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

  • Swabs must be received in the laboratory within 48 hours of collection.
  • Tissue must be received ASAP.
  • Urine must be received within 24 hours of collection.

Unacceptable Conditions

Unacceptable specimens include but are not limited to:

  1. Specimens that do not meet the laboratory labeling policy.
  2. Dry swabs.
  3. Swabs that have been refrigerated.
  4. Specimens that exceed stability limits.

Collection Instructions

Respiratory Specimens:

  • Collect in a sterile container, and submit entire collection.

Swab: (Dermal, ear, mouth, ocular, throat, genital or wound)

  • E swab
  • Before collecting specimen, wipe away any excessive amounts of secretions and discharge, if appropriate.
  • Obtain secretions or fluid from source with sterile culturette swab.
  • Indicate specimen source on specimen and order.

Urine:

  • Collect 2mL of a random urine specimen in a sterile container.

Remarks

  • Gram stain is included in this culture order.
  • Susceptibility testing not performed in house. Can be sent to a reference laboratory upon request.
  • This test will only identify yeast in clinical specimens. Other fungal agents of disease will not be identified.
