Ordering Recommendations

The assay is a qualitative indirect test for M. tuberculosis infection.

Collect

QuantiFERON-Plus blood collection kit.

Collection kits are located in the Special Chemistry Department.

 

Specimen Volume

1 mL of blood by venipuncture directly into each of the QFT-Plus Blood Collection Tubes.

Specimen Handling

Upon receipt in the lab:  Deliver to Special Chemistry.

  • Tubes must be maintained at room temperature until incubated.
  • Tubes must be incubated at 37°C within 16 hours of draw.
  • Invert the tubes to mix 10 times prior to incubation at 37°C.
  • Incubate the tubes upright at 37°C 16-24 hours. The incubator does not require CO2 or humidification.
  • Centrifuge at 3600 RPM for 15 minutes prior to testing.

Collection Instructions

  • This procedure should be performed by a trained phlebotomist.
  • There is no specific order these tubes need to be drawn in IF this is the onlytest ordered. However, if the patient is having additional lab work along with this test you should follow the order of draw for all tests then draw the four Quantiferon-TB kit tubes.
  • .Collect 1ml of blood into each of the specialized blood collection tubes: nilcontrol tube (grey cap), TB antigen tubes (yellow and green capped tubes),and mitogen control tube (purple cap). Total volume will be 4 ml.
  • As 1 ml tubes draw blood relatively slowly, keep the tube on the needle for 2–3 seconds once the tube appears to have completed filling. This will ensure that the correct volume is drawn.
  • The black mark on the side of the tubes indicates the validated range of 0.8 to 1.2 ml. If the level of blood in any tube is outside of the indicator mark, a new blood sample should be obtained. 
  • If a "butterfly needle" is being used to collect blood, a "purge" tube should be used to ensure that the tubing is filled with blood prior to the QFT-Plus Blood Collection tubes being used.Do this if no other bloodwork has been drawn before this collection.
  • Immediately after filling the tubes, invert them ten (10) times just firmly enough to make sure the entire inner surface of the tube is coated with blood.
  • DO NOT SPIN specimens.
  • Do not refrigerate.
  • Specimens MUST reach lab within 16 hours of collection.
